I love plants but not all of them!

There has been a overwhelming liking towards Cacti and Succulents these days. I just don’t understand why! As far as I can see, people love them only because they really don’t need to be watched over. They are fine if you water them once in a week or 10 days. They are fine irrespective of whether you place them indoors or outdoors.

My point is if you’re looking for that kind of convenience, gardening isn’t the right thing. The entire purpose of Gardening is to develop a relationship between you and plants. And what kind of relationship are you building if you’re watering your plant just thrice in a month?

cactus

Cacti is meant for the areas where nothing else can grow.ย Why would you keep it at your home when you can grow a lot more beautiful set of flowering plants? But again this is just my opinion. You don’t have to agree! And there are always exceptions like the Aloe! Its a succulent but its proven quite beneficial as it is used to treat cold and cough, its used as skin and hair care. But it still doesn’t explain the growing fad for Cacti.

bonsai

After Cacti, its about Bonsai! I just hate the concept of Bonsai. How can somebody prune roots? That is just so gross! Those are trees which, under normal circumstances, grow to a height of 12-50 feet (or even more) depending on which tree it is. How can you just prune its roots, limit its food (nutrients) and stall its growth. It makes me cry. Imagine stalling your child’s growth by not giving it food. Just some liquid so that it is alive and seeing them not grow at all or grow only to a height of 2-3 feet instead of 5-6! How does that feel?

Do I need to put a disclaimer saying the pictures used in this post are for illustrative purpose only and do not belong to my garden?

  1. I partially agree with you; I agree that gardening is a time intensive and personal thing. I have a mini-garden in my room that has roses, orchids and a few more plants. But I actually genuinely love the look of succulents and cacti too – I have a lot of those as well! xx

Wait it just hit me.. However good they may look.. they keep looking the same.. I mean you have roses and orchids, you know how it is.. every day we wake up to something new.. new leaves.. buds.. flowers.. withered flowers.. dried leaves.. every single day it is different.. how about looking at the most gorgeous thing every single day.. day after day.. month after month.. do you think they’ll still have that charm?

  2. Isn’t bonsai very hard to grow at home..I have heard it needs a lot of care. so far I have seen them only in botanical gardens. But it looks really beautiful I think of it as a form of art and I’ve so many of those cute and colorful succulents they truly add a pop of color since they are very easy to take care of my kids love them.

    1. Hi Latha! Yes Bonsai does need a lot of care and if we are growing them at home right from the seed.. it needs about 3-5 years! Oh I have never debated about the looks! I totally agree.. whether its bonsai or succulents.. they always look damn good!!

  3. Reema..liked this straightforward post. I agree ..Even I’ll never go for bonsai, it’s like retarding growth of baby plant .๐Ÿ™..Succulents are beautiful, I would go for it even if they look the same all the time.

  5. Yes. Gardening should be done with love. Plants should be treated as living thing. After all the benefits they provide us, their growth shouldn’t be inhibited

      1. I do stop by often. But the network has it problems and it gets very slow to post the comments. So, I don’t always bother about that.

  6. Well, I see we have something in common where it concerns disliking of plants. I agree with you that gardening should be done with love.

  7. So I love the honesty about the cacti and succulent fad going on now!! People are crazy about them….and I’ve joined in! I totally see where you are coming from and I don’t enjoy when people are jumping on a bandwagon (no matter what wagon it is) just because it’s popular and they want to join in. I do love cacti and succulents though!! There are so many neat and unique ones, just like there are in plants and flowers. They are easy to take care of and I appreciate that. I do find myself having a “relationship” with them, but I can also see why you’d say you don’t see how. Mine are at my office at work, so I spend 8 hours in a room with them. All in all, I enjoyed reading your thoughts and ideas on them!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I love both and both are part of my garden. I have grown bonsai right from seedling and love cacti not just bcz they do not need care but bcz they are beautiful. They are beautiful with their thorn. Dear, there are cacti which are not easy to grow, it really needs special care to grow in proper shape.

    1. Thank You for stopping By Reena! I appreciate your efforts! I also welcome your perspective. My apologies if I have offended you! As I said in my other reply, I have just put up my perspective and in no way it means that I am right! The entire purpose was to get in other perspectives about cacti, succulents and Bonsai! ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Reema, I have grown cacti and succulents in the UK and have always loved them but, you are right, nothing changes. I think it is because they struggle with life there! Cacti in particular have a need for a huge amount of sunlight. Now that I have a garden in Portugal where there is much more sun I am seeing the real beauty in these plants as the freely flower and spread. I think maybe we only see plants at their best when we can provide them with everything they need.
