So you say you don’t have a green thumb? Or you think Gardening is too much effort and you don’t really want to get into it? So here’s me telling you to do it with just this one. Start with any of these, one single plant and I am sure, you can still call it a Garden!! 🙂
The best way to make your Balcony/Window/Terrace/Backyard look dense, greener and colorful is by having climbers around. Just a single Climber is going to make it look as dense as 4-5 plants put together (or probably even more). So if you don’t want to have too many plants around but you would love to have that green cover – Climbers are the best way to go!!
5 Must have Climbers:
So here’s my list of 5 must have climbers. But there are many many more. I would love to know your favorite climber!
2.Rangoon Creeper (Madhu-Malti)
3.Jasmine (Jasminium auriculatum) – (Juhi)
4.Passion Flower (Krishna-Kamal)
5.Garlic Vine (Lasun – Vel/Bel)
They all grow in pots as well. Don’t worry about training them. Its very easy. You can even let them grow on their own… in random patterns. If you want to train them, here’s a quick video by ehow-Garden.

If there is anything that can increase the beauty of your Garden manifold – Its the Fauna that it attracts 🙂 Especially the Birds, Bees and Butterflies!!
To start with, we can place the Bird- Feeders. Click on the image to know more about bird feeders.
When you have birds visiting regularly, you can place the Bird- Shelters. You may start with one and then go on increasing the number of Bird Shelters. It is not a very common thing for birds to adopt man-made shelters. But you can always try. Do not hang the shelters. Bird Shelters should be steady. Also, do not relocate them frequently. Here are a few shelters. Click on the images to know more.
Now here’s another thing – Gardens have a different look by day and by night. So if you like to spend time in your garden in the evening, beautiful lights are a must. Fairy lights are my all time favorites. Unlike lamps, which are confined to one place, we can create different patterns with fairy lights. I love them also because they can be used both indoors and outdoors. Here are a few different lights with which you can light up your space. Click on the images to know more.
Furniture: When I say furniture it doesn’t mean a whole set of chairs, tables or couch. It can be just that one single swing Chair or an easy chair. Or it can be a floor furnishings like a Yoga Mat or floor chair. The floor furnishings look best in Balconies especially if you like to exercise and/or meditate in your garden.

Before creating a Garden, it is very essential that we ask ourselves, what type of Garden do we want? A lot of time things go wrong only because we do not have a definite idea as to which type of Garden we are about to set up.
To decide which type of Garden you want to set up, you’ll have to take into consideration the following aspects:
- Your likes and preferences
- Area available for Gardening
- Climate and Season
- Availability of Sunlight
- Amount of time you are willing to dedicate for Maintenance
A type of Garden is important because it tells us:
- Which type of plants we will be planting
- Which type of containers will we require to grow these plants
A few examples of different types of Garden are:
- Aesthetic Garden
- Kitchen/Vegetable Garden
- Medicinal Garden
- Perennial flowering Garden
- Seasonal flowering Garden
- Indoor Garden
- Nocturnal Garden
Every type has further sub-types to it. For example, you decide to set up a vegetable garden. The next question is which type of vegetable garden?
- Is it going to be leafy vegetables like spinach, fenugreek, Dill, etc or
- Are you going to set up stem and root veges like potato, onion, radish, carrot, etc or
- Will you be having Climbers and Creepers like gourds and peas or
- All of them.
So the point I am trying to make is, You should have a definite idea as to which Garden are you setting up!
Once you have decided on this, we can go our next segment, i.e Garden Arena!
