Flower Garden – Part XX – Firecracker Flower

Heyy friends.. this is the last one in the series… Its called the Firecracker Flower orΒ Crossandra infundibuliformis.

It is native to southern India but I believe it can be grown in several different regions as this plant has received Award of Garden Merit from Royal Horticultural Society in 2017.

3 main reasons to have this plant:

The flowers are very beautiful… But the Buds are even more beautiful πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Crossandra is perfect to add that light orange color to your Garden! They have multiple blooms at any given point of time.

These are very easy to maintain these plants.

Plant them in Big Pots. Add sufficient compost while potting them and then once in every 45-60 days.

Flower Garden – Part XIX – Asian Jasmines

I really wanna talk about these 2 Jasmines which are native to Asia/India.

The first one isΒ Tabernaemontana divaricata orΒ commonly called pinwheel flower, crape jasmine, East India rosebay.Β  Also called as Tagar or chandni in Hindi.

The second one isΒ Gardenia jasminoides

To my friends across continents… Both these jasmines are native to Asia… I don’t know how well they’ll fare in your countries. But they subtropical plants… So no harm in trying though πŸ˜‰

These are very easy to grow plants. Since these are perennials, you just have to buy them once. They don’t need any pruning. Plant them in big pots.

They need good sunlight. If not complete, at least partial sunlight. Keep adding compost regularly, say every month for initial 4 months and then once every 45-60 days.

Flower Garden – Part XVII – The Nocturnal flowers

Today, we are going to discuss about two plants, which have very fragrant flowers and bloom only during night.

The first one,Β Cestrum nocturnum,Β common names include night-blooming jasmine, night-blooming cestrum, and raatrani.

The second one,Β Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, the night-flowering jasmine or parijat.

So, 3 reasons why you should have these in your garden…

For the late nights strolls that you take in your Garden.

For the fragrance. The enchanting fragrance spreads throughout your garden and your home.

They come in bunches. They have multiple blooms.

Isn’t it exciting? Few things to take care. Pot them in the biggest pot you have. Add sufficient compost while potting them. Add compost every month for initial 4 months and then once every 45-60 days.

Vinca also called as periwinkle in English or Sadaphuli in Hindi are beautiful small colorful flowers.

3 quick reasons why you should have Vinca:

They are strong and sturdy.

They have beautiful small colorful flowers.Β They are perfect for adding different colors to your Garden!

They need no maintenance.

 

They say Vincas are both annuals and perennials, but I have only the annual ones in my Garden. That means… new colors every year πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

As I have said earlier, with annuals you can add sufficient compost while potting and just once throughout the life of the plant (or more if you feel necessary).

Vincas love bright sun and don’t fare very well in the monsoons! So be sure to buy/plant them after the monsoons!

Petunias are here! πŸ˜€

The lovely, colorful, bright, cheerful Petunias are here! Once you have petunias in your garden, you can’t help but fall in love with them.

3 quick reasons why you should have petunias:

They come in various colors. They are perfect for adding different colors to your Garden!

They have multiple blooms at a time. Gives your garden the grandeur you have been searching for.

These plants have a tendency to fall or grow downwards, making them apt for hanging baskets.

Flower Garden – Part XIV – Plumeria

Often called as CHAMPA or CHAPHA, Plumeria is one of the most easiest growing plants. That is one of the primary reasons why landscape designers/horticulturist use them anywhere and everywhere. You find these plants along the roads, highways, in backyard, residential housing compounds, around commercial buildings, parks, gardens, everywhere.

3 reasons why you should have plumeria:

They are strong and sturdy.

The flower stays afresh for 10-20 days. The flowers have a very long shelf life. Hence even if the plant blooms just once every month, it looks as if the plant is laden with flowers always.

Flowers in all seasons and has a mild beautiful fragrance to it. It blooms in bunches making it look spectacular.

Plumeria has more than 300 varieties. Choose the one that is indigenous to your location. Use a big pot to plant them. They need regular supply of nutrients. Add lots of compost while potting them. Later on add compost every 45-60 days for initial 6-8 months and then once in every 75-90 days.

Flower Garden – Part XIII – Rangoon Creeper

Combretum indicum, also known as the Chinese honeysuckle or Rangoon creeper, are beautiful flowering vines with Red color flowers found very commonly in Asia. The beauty of these flowers is they start as white colored flowers.. slowly turning pink and then maroon.

Since they are climbers you can place them in any part of your garden and then place support in the shape and direction as you want them to grow.

They need bright sunlight.

Keep adding compost every month for initial 4 months and then once every 45-60 days.

They are very low maintenance plants. They have a very high aesthetic appeal and are strong and sturdy.

Yellow Canna Flower

Flower Garden – Part XII – Canna

Isn’t it bright and beautiful?

Canna often comes in these bright yellow, orange, red colors which makes them very attractive. The unique petal (stamen) structure mimicking lilies adds to its beauty.

Canna is very easy to grow and loves bright sunlight.

This one is again one of those low maintenance plants. Add sufficient compost while potting them so that you don’t have to add compost later on. Adding compost later on by digging the soil around plants may at times harm the upcoming new shoot.

Flower Garden – Part XI – Lantana

If you want a plant that needs no care, no pruning, not much composting, yet all season flowers.. Opt for Lantana! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Well I just gave you all the reasons, didn’t I? Now what do I write in the rest of the post? πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

Lantanas are small bunch flowers available in various colors and shades of Red, yellow, orange, violet, blue, white. etc

Butterflies love Lantana. You must have noticed these flowers alongside the roads/highways. They often crop up on their own and many times are classified as weeds!

These are seriously no care – no maintenance plants. So go.. get them πŸ™‚ πŸ˜€ πŸ™‚

When I say not much composting, what I am suggesting is, you can add compost in an interval of 75-90 days i.e just once in every 2-3 months. Also, I am assuming you’re potting your own plant. Click here to know how to pot your plant.

Bougainvillea and me

Flower Garden – Part X – Bougainvillea

Who doesn’t love Bougainvilleas? What should I write about them? One of the most Amazing, wonderful, beautiful, enchanting flowers on earth! These plants are perfect ones for fencing your garden. The thorns deter people from crossing over the fence/compound wall and the amazing flowers gives the beautiful landscaped look.

These are very strong and sturdy and require zero maintenance. If you’re placing them in a pot, choose the biggest pot. Keep adding compost at regular intervals.

These are climbers. So if you want them to climb in a particular direction, install supports in those directions.

Choose maximum different colors you can. All of them look equally beautiful. πŸ™‚
